The CHPN is valid for four years, and you renew through HPCC’s accrual program rather than by
retaking the exam each cycle. Here’s what HPCC requires.
How long is the CHPN valid?
Four years from the date you certify.
How do you renew?
You renew through HPAR (Hospice and Palliative Accrual for Recertification),
which combines ongoing practice/work hours with points earned from professional activities —
plus a Situational Judgment Exercise (SJE). You can submit your HPAR application
beginning one year before your expiration date, up until the date itself.
What counts toward HPAR?
A range of professional activities — continuing education, practice hours, precepting,
presenting, and more — so much of it can come from work you’re already doing. Keep
documentation in case of audit.
