These are the two main medical-surgical nursing certifications, and they’re easy to confuse.
The short version: CMSRN comes from MSNCB (the AMSN’s board), and MEDSURG-BC comes from
the ANCC. Both validate expert med-surg practice; the differences are in the issuing
body and the details.
CMSRN vs MEDSURG-BC at a glance
| CMSRN | MEDSURG-BC | |
|---|---|---|
| Awarding body | MSNCB (AMSN) | ANCC |
| Eligibility | RN + 2,000 med-surg hours in 3 years | RN + 2 years’ experience, 2,000 hours, and continuing education in med-surg |
| Valid for | 5 years | 5 years |
| Renewal | CE (90 hours) + practice hours, or exam | ANCC renewal requirements (CE and professional activities) |
How do you choose?
- Either is widely respected for bedside med-surg nurses — many employers
accept both and pay the same differential for either. - Check your employer. Some facilities or clinical-ladder programs name one
specifically, so confirm which your workplace recognizes or prefers. - Consider the organization. If you’re active with AMSN, the CMSRN pairs
naturally; if you prefer the ANCC ecosystem, MEDSURG-BC fits.
Whichever you choose, the preparation is the same — broad, timed, scenario-based practice.
Confirm the current requirements on each board’s site before you apply.
