The CCMA is an accessible entry point into clinical healthcare. You qualify through training or
through work experience, per NHA.
The basics
You need a high school diploma or GED (or to be within a few months of earning one).
Two routes to eligibility
- Training route: complete a medical assistant training or education program
within the last five years. - Experience route: have at least one year of supervised work experience in
medical assisting within the previous three years.
No prior license required
Unlike nursing certifications, the CCMA doesn’t require a professional license — it’s
often a first credential for people entering clinical healthcare.
